_A Word on Minimalism

There were many good discussions on what is minimalism during the past years, , and yet it is quite a confuse notion. It is often described by expressions such as “less is more”, “bare essentials”, and, more specifically, “white space” or “typocentric design”. It is presented as a trend in every article summarizing the next year’s web design trends. Year after year. I think we miss a point here.

Minimalism ain’t a trend but a mean of expression

Minimalism is timeless. Trends come and go. Remember the swirls? The circles? The bokeh textures, drop shadows or shiny web 2.0 reflexions? Now these were trends. Minimalism, on the other hand, will always be around, because it ain’t a technique, but a mean of expression. Like sketching. Or oil painting.

A principle of minimalism

There are trends inside minimalism in the same way there are trends inside illustrative design. The main difference is that trends issued inside minimalism don’t get outdated like swirls and shiny surfaces. This is because heavily decorated designs are inspirational (inspired by the Muse or by the trend-setters), whilst minimal designs are reflective.

Designing less is thinking more. It is painting with concepts. And the good part is that it’s up to you to choose and define those concepts, according to every project requirements.
